The science

The scientific basis

Our approach rests on validated metabolomics, large-scale cohort studies and a direct collaboration with Nightingale Health and the LUMC. Here we explain how it works.

Measurement technique

Metabolomics using NMR

Metabolomics is the study of the small molecules (metabolites) produced by all the processes in your body, from fat metabolism to inflammation. Their concentrations form a snapshot of your physiological state.

Using NMR spectroscopy (nuclear magnetic resonance) we measure a broad panel of these molecules at once from a single blood sample. The method is highly standardised, very reproducible and cost-efficient. These are the conditions for reliable measurement on a large scale.

Why NMR?

  • One sample, hundreds of markers at once
  • High reproducibility between labs
  • Scalable and affordable for population research
  • Used internationally in biobanks and cohorts
Validation & collaboration

Developed by Nightingale Health and tested with the LUMC

Vitahealth works with Nightingale Health, a global leader in the early detection of disease risk and preventive health, and with the Leiden University Medical Center, an international authority in the field of metabolomics and the biology of ageing. The metabolic score was developed on the basis of the largest metabolic data cohorts in the world and then independently validated.

Studies keep showing the same thing: the profile predicts mortality, frailty, cognitive decline and dozens of diseases. Often on top of classic risk factors, and often better than genetics.

Research

44% more cardiovascular disease prevented

A large-scale analysis by the University of Cambridge of data from almost 300,000 people (UK Biobank) examined what metabolic biomarkers (measured using NMR metabolomics) add to SCORE2, the guideline tool for estimating cardiovascular risk.

The outcome: by including the biomarkers, 44% more cases of cardiovascular disease can be prevented than with SCORE2 alone. People who later had a heart attack or stroke were more often placed in the correct risk category, without more people being treated unnecessarily.

It shows how much sharper the picture becomes when biomarkers are measured: the basis for targeted, personal prevention.
