Biomarkers

What your blood knows about your health

For a long time we had to infer health from symptoms, risk factors and a handful of separate blood values. We can do better now: modern lab technology measures hundreds of substances at once, and together they tell us much more.

Hundreds of substances, one picture

Your blood contains thousands of substances produced by everything your body does: digesting, repairing, inflaming, ageing. Biomarkers are the measurable substances among them. Individually they say little; together they form an accurate picture of your health.

From that picture we calculate the underlying physiological state of your body. This is also known as your "metabolic age", and it can differ considerably from what your passport says.

Calendar age is too crude. Metabolic age makes the difference visible.

The same age on paper can mean something very different in the body:

45
Metabolic
60
Calendar
75
Metabolic

Your body can age faster than your calendar age suggests, or be more resilient than you think. Someone who is metabolically 45 can expect considerably more healthy years ahead than someone of the same age who is metabolically 75.

The measurement

What exactly do the Vitahealth biomarkers measure?

Biomarkers capture thousands of subtle processes at once: inflammation, metabolism, organ function, energy balance, oxidative stress and recovery capacity.

Metabolomics measures a large number of small molecules at the same time using NMR technology. The method is highly reproducible and scalable, which makes it suitable for large groups.

Metabolic score

More specific than cholesterol or BMI

From a single measurement we calculate a profile of your current health: the metabolic score. It summarises the underlying state of your body in one clinically relevant measure, and therefore says more than separate values such as cholesterol, glucose or BMI.

The score

What exactly does the Vitahealth metabolic score measure?

An advanced yet affordable way to measure your overall health through an extensive blood analysis.

Developed using data from twelve large population studies. The score accurately predicts health risks and life expectancy, especially in middle-aged people. → View the research

The score does more than estimate risks. Several studies show that the metabolic score is a strong indicator of age-related conditions and vitality:

Physical frailty

Shows whether you are biologically older or younger than your calendar age, and how frail your body is. (Study)

Brain function

A better score is associated with a sharper mind, better memory and continued independence. (Study)

Long-term mental health

Can help predict whether your memory will decline over the next 10 years. (Study)

Resistance

A link has even been found with the course of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. (Study)

In short: the metabolic score works like a "health check-up for your body" that lets you work on your health through targeted lifestyle changes.

Evidence

Scientific research supports this

Large studies show time and again that these profiles are strong predictors of health, disease and mortality.

40,000+ people

Data from more than 40,000 people show that biomarkers:

  • predict mortality very accurately
  • predict frailty
  • predict cognitive decline
  • predict hospital admissions

Independently of classic risk factors.

24 diseases at once

Metabolomic profiles predict the risk of 24 diseases at the same time (diabetes, heart failure, kidney disease, dementia).

The biomarker profile matches or outperforms existing clinical models.

Three national biobanks

In three biobanks (700,217 participants), metabolomics profiles proved to be:

  • often better than genetics at predicting disease
  • dynamic: they change with lifestyle
  • usable as a scalable population-health tool

Together these studies provide an exceptionally strong scientific basis. You can also take a step yourself and contribute to further scientific research with your measurements.

Your biological age can be measured. And improved.

As a clinically relevant measure of frailty, long-term disease risk, cognitive health, cardiovascular disease, lung and kidney disease and overall mortality.

And more importantly: you can improve it.

Biomarkers respond to lifestyle interventions. Your genes do not.

Examples from research
  • In intervention studies, epigenetic age can drop by 25–40 weeks in just 13 weeks
  • Metabolomics profiles improve with weight loss or quitting smoking
  • In Finland, GPs use biomarkers as a wake-up call

That makes biomarkers not only diagnostic, but also motivating and empowering.

Impact

Why this is changing the healthcare landscape

1
Better risk selection for prevention

Biomarkers identify who is really at risk.

2
From reactive to predictive care

You see problems years before they become clinical.

3
Objective feedback on lifestyle

Not just "I feel better", but measurable: "+2.1 predicted healthy years".

4
Encouraging self-management

We support you in building healthy habits and making conscious choices.
